Middlesbrough Football Club mascot Roary the Lion and his friends from MFC Foundation helped Cleveland Fire Brigade kick-off their firework safety campaign by urging everyone to stay safe and go to an organised display.

They joined firefighters at Middlesbrough Community Fire Station to remind people to keep on the ball with other key safety reminders such as never play with fireworks.

Steve Johnson, Area Manager, Prevention, Protection and Engagement said: “It is great to have Roary on our team and help us keep everyone safe. We fully understand there may be a higher level of excitement than usual as many people look forward to fireworks for the first time for many months and having missed out last year due to the pandemic.

“We just ask everyone to Be Smart, Be Safe and Be Sensible and leave it to the experts by going to one of the many organised displays across the area.

“Watching fireworks at a secured site, behind a safety cordon, is the best way to celebrate safely and avoid injury. Lots of organised events have food, music and other entertainment to provide fun for all the family in a safe environment.”

Don’t forget fireworks are explosive and extremely dangerous so remember:

  • Think don’t drink – alcohol and fireworks do not mix
  • Stay alert – always supervise children around fireworks
  • Stand back – keep behind safety cordons in the appropriate area
  • Four–legged friends – keep pets indoors

Remember you can report any issues such as anti-social behaviour anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
