The Third Sector Trends study was conceived and originally commissioned by Northern Rock Foundation with research conducted by the Universities of Southampton, Teesside and Durham. The Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland was a co-funder of the research and is now responsible for its legacy.

We collaborate with partners including St Chad’s College at the University of Durham, Joseph Rowntree Foundation and IPPR North to expand and continue the research. The most recent North East England report was published by the Community Foundation in 2017 with further support through our partnerships with the Esmée Fairbairn and Garfield Weston Foundations.

On 27 May 2020 Prof. Tony Chapman presented the fifth and latest edition of Third Sector Trends in North East England. Prof. Chapman gave a brief overview of the report before reflecting that the sector is actually made up of three sub-sectors and how each of these may fare post-Covid-19. The first video contains the full presentation, the second the post presentation Q&A session.
