Great news for men aged 50 and over!

Volunteering Matters’ ‘Sporting Chance’ Project has received £1500 funding award from the Greggs Foundation, allowing the group to be sustained for the foreseeable future.

Every Wednesday older men from the Stockton-on-Tees area meet at Norton Sports Trust outdoor pitches for an hour for a game of walking football. Come rain, hail or sunshine at least twenty men turn up to play the beautiful game, (at a slower pace, more suited to men aged 50+!)

John Ellison, the groups Volunteer Secretary describes the group, “We have over 40 members and whist we meet to have a good kick around this group is much more than a game of football. The men come from all walks of life, some do come to get fitter, some to lose weight, some to have respite from a caring role but others, who live alone, come for the friendly companionship, the crack and a good cup of tea afterwards. Most of the attendees are late 60’s early 70’s . The noise of happy conversation over a cuppa after the game is deafening”.

This group was initially instigated through the Volunteering Matters ‘Sporting Chance’ project and now through the volunteer committee it runs as a constituted group.
