Domestic Abuse Child and Family Court Liaison is a new role developed as part of the Whole System Approach to tackling domestic abuse. As part of the Whole System Approach the Family Court Liason Officer’s (FLCO) will be offering support to victims who are going through the family court process.
The aim of the role is to prevent any further abuse to victims and ensure that the safeguarding of children and potential victims of domestic abuse and coercive and controlling behavior is a priority during proceedings.
Referrals can be made at any stage of the proceedings, however, to get the maximum benefit to all parties we ask for referrals to be completed at the earliest opportunity. Although this service will be covering Cleveland only, there are counterparts throughout the North East covering Durham, Darlington and Northumbria so if you require their information please do not hesitate to ask.
The service we can provide will consist of;
Support and signposting that will be tailored to client’s needs. This may be around civil injunctions and protection orders, child contact arrangements both public and private, guidance in self-representing, and divorce/separation.
Types of support:
- Providing guidance to unrepresented victims around conduct in court/special measures/applying for information from the police
- Signposting/referring to Domestic Abuse services
- Signposting to solicitors for advice, representation and assessment for legal aid
- Support completing court paperwork and writing court statements
- Other support that may be required dependent on needs.

Cleveland police and the Crime Commissioner are eager to work collaboratively with partner agencies to ensure that victims are supported throughout their experience within the civil and family court from as early point in proceedings as possible.
