Stockton Borough Council is currently recruiting members to sit on Education Admission Appeal Panels and Independent Review Panels (formerly exclusion appeals) within the Borough of Stockton-On-Tees.

  • Are you interested in local education?
  • Do you have tribunal experience or would you like to obtain such experience?
  • Do you have good communication, reasoning and decision-making skills?
  • Do you have a child at school in Stockton-on-Tees area?
  • Are you, or have you ever been, a Governor or teacher at a school?

An Education Admission Appeal Panel must be set up by the Local Authority to hear appeals against unsuccessful applications for admission to schools within the Borough, including Community Schools, Church School, Academies/Free Schools. Independent Reviews Panels must be set up to review decisions to permanently exclude.

Education Admission Appeals represent the bulk of the work of Panels. Professionalism and confidentiality are essential features of the role as Panel Members are privy to a significant amount of confidential information. The Panels’ decisions are very important for pupils, parents, schools, academies and the Local Authority, in balancing the impact of pressures on school organisation against family life.

The Panel is supported by legally qualified clerks. Training, information and advice is provided to all Panel Members to enable you to fulfil this role.

Although this is a voluntary position, (i.e. unpaid), it is flexible around your commitments and gives you an interesting and rewarding opportunity to contribute to the local community. Travelling expenses are payable.
