Grants are available for charitable organisations who are receiving, or wishing to receive, referrals through the NHS Waiting Well Programmes in County Durham and Tees Valley. The funding aims to address the financial and cost of living issues experienced by patients who are waiting for planned surgery.

For example:

  • help with budgeting, debts and benefits.
  • providing support to access food, equipment and energy poverty services.
  • providing advice and help to access small emergency grants for household equipment, travel costs etc.

Size of grant: up to £5,000 over 12 months for activity in County Durham and Tees Valley

Each Waiting Well Programme provides packages of support through participating organisations to individuals awaiting planned surgery, such as hip or knee replacement, who are identified as either:

Living in the top 20% of most deprived areas in the region and who are impacted by other issues such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, a high BMI or are struggling to reduce smoking. OR Having a learning disability.

This pilot project focuses on improving an individual’s preparation for surgery. Not all patients waiting for planned surgery are eligible for support; only those who have been referred by the NHS Waiting Well Programme into a project will be able to receive support.

Charities and not-for profit organisations who are providing (or who wish to provide) support for patients on the Waiting Well Programme.

Funding to cover new or sustain existing activities for a minimum of 12 months.

Project examples:

  • providing advice and help with budgeting, managing money and claiming benefits
  • providing support to access food, equipment and energy poverty services
  • providing advice and help to access small emergency grants for household equipment, travel costs etc.

The fund is now open and applications must be submitted by 29th September 2023.
