Holiday hunger occurs when a child’s household is, or will become, food insecure during the school holidays.

It is estimated that over 3 million children are at risk in the UK. This is a particular problem for households whose children are in receipt of free school meals during term time, but they are not the only children who are affected by this issue.

The North East Child Poverty Trust (NECPT) ran a Big Lottery regional holiday project in summer 2017 to address and research holiday provision – #nedayout. NECPT now wants to map all holiday provision that took place during the school summer holidays 2018 across the North East to better understand the scope of current provision and how this relates to the areas of greatest need.
