This course is vital to ALL frontline practitioners in the children’s workforce, therefore, if you/your team member require this training for their role please apply asap.

Course Aim(s): To increase participants’ confidence and ability to respond appropriately to any safeguarding concerns whilst recognising their own roles and responsibility in safeguarding children with additional and complex needs. And to raise awareness of the complex issues and dilemmas in safeguarding children with additional and complex needs and to improve the professional interventions and planning in response to children and young people with additional and complex needs.

Learning Objectives: By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Understand why children with additional and complex needs are more vulnerable to harm.
  • Acquire an understanding of own attitudes towards disability and how these impinge on safeguarding practice.
  • Identify the additional potential risk factors for children with additional and complex needs in the context of their environment and family settings.
  • Consider the barriers to communicating with children with additional and complex needs and explore the additional tools and methods to overcome these.
  • To be able to identify the indicators of risk.
  • Discuss the messages from Serious Case Reviews in our region.

All of the courses within this programme are awareness raising courses delivered on a multi-agency basis. Please refer to the course details and target audience section to establish if the course is suitable to your job role. If your role requires more specialist training please contact your own organisation workforce development representative. Please note: All of the courses in the safeguarding children learning programme can be utilised as a safeguarding refresher once you have completed the Safeguarding Children Foundation training course.
